Just One More...

Seasonsgrt3 Even though Christmas has come and gone, I thought I'd take the time to share one more holiday card from the Season's Greetings 2007 class I taught at Stamp 'n Scrap back in November...

But why, you may be asking?!?  (Doesn't she know everyone is sick of red and green and the holiday theme?)

Well, there are three reasons --

Because for some reason I really I like these foolish cats, and this time I actually paired each tail with its rightful owner.  ~chuckle, chuckle

Because this card can so easily be transformed into just a plain old winter's greeting card -- Simply change the color scheme and the sentiment... andSeasonsgrt3b

Because of all the punched snowflakes I've ever made, never before had I thought of using anything except white, metallic, or blue... So when I off-handedly created these colorized flakes, and loved the effect, I really wanted to "share the inspiration."

Cardworks:
Stamps: ABC-Caroling Kitties, ABC-Joy Wreath, WD-192 Winter Days
Ink: Versafine (onyx black)
Punches: Various Snowflakes, McGill 3" Word Tag
Markers & Colored Pencils
Print Paper: Striped
Diamond Glitter Glue
Other: Paper piecing on scarf.

Crying "Uncle"

This past week was supposed to be a "quiet" one on the home front with no parent appointments scheduled.  Great!  That would give me plenty of time to prepare for the holidays, right???

Well, it didn't turn out quite that way...

The Friday evening before this much anticipated week of quiet, my mother called with her grocery list, and to let me know "stuff" had been lined up (all medically related) for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  After all, there was nothing else going on...

As I hung up the phone, I felt completely overwhelmed, and then the panic set in -- How would I ever fit everything in now?!?  All I had done so far was purchase a couple of on-line gifts for Eli, write one Christmas letter, and stash away a couple "little somethings" for my favorite Cookies...

When Mark got home, I sort of fell apart, and quite unlike me, weepily unloaded... Then together we talked it out, and decided not to "do" Christmas this year -- no card sending, no special baking, no more decorating (Eli, almost singlehandedly, had done the tree a couple of weeks ago), and no more shopping... What was done or started, was done and would get finished, but what wasn't, wouldn't be... Everyone agreed, and with a bit of uncertainty, and a lot of prayer, my load lifted.

Since then, I've done a lot of contemplating... We are all really happy and contented this year.  We are still looking forward to Christmas with more joy than ever, and for the first time in years, there is absolutely no pressure on any of us.  Not at all what I was expecting...

In fact, I think God has allowed us the chance to know tangibly what we have always believed, and taught our children, but never had cause to truly experience...

When you have personally accepted the Greatest Christmas Gift of all-time, Christmas lives within the heart, and you can still celebrate a joy-filled holiday without "doing" or "having" anything else at all...

In the words of Laura Ingalls Wilder, "It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air."

HeisbornThis is my version (I added the pink cheeks and embossed the images) of a card originally designed by smART Cookie, Heidi Kingery.  It is so simple and perfect that I just had to copy it.

It also states what my family and I are truly celebrating this Christmas of 2007.

Cardworks:
Stamps:  ABC-Baby Savior, CMS-13 In A Manger
Square card - front panel scored along each edge.
Versafine onyx black ink embossed with Transcendence powder.
Colored with markers and pencils.
Baby Savior image stamped a second time on scrap, cut out, and adhered to card with foam tape.
Reminder:  Sending a square card through the mail costs an extra 17 cents.

A Little Whimsy

Just want to share one of the lighthearted cards from the Season's Greetings 2007 card class I taught at Stamp 'n Scrap in Gardiner, Maine a couple of weeks ago:

Seasonsgrt1Since I had seen a similar "faux matchbook" style card somewhere out there in cyberspace, the design for this card is not 100% original, but the scalloped edge on the cyber card had been made using one of those currently popular Nestabilities dies... This, I'm sure, is why the idea stuck in my mind (or craw), and was the reason I "needed" to prove I could duplicate the look without having the dies...

Actually, my self-imposed challenge was easily accomplished using a pair of good, old-fashioned, Fiskar decorative edged scissors called "Clouds."

If the print paper looks familiar, it may be because it's from the same sheet I used on the last tea party challenge card -- It happened to be handy, and seemed to match the whimsical feel of the dog image and saying from CMS-22 For All.

Looking at the outside of the card, one sees only a partial of Mr. Woofie, but inside he looks like this: Dog

The rest of the cardworks are as follows:
Versafine onyx black ink and Transcendence embossing powder.
Whale Of A Punch circle (for window).
Image colored with markers.
Red/White Swiss dot ribbon.
Diamond glitter glue (on the white areas of the candy cane).
Dimensional glaze (on the dog slobber).

Pretty Poinsettia

Ty_svmThe real poinsettia pictured at the beginning of my previous post was a recent, unexpected gift from someone in the local stamping community who, referring to my parents, simply said, "I've been where you are, and I just want you to know I feel for you..."  How kind was that!?!  I look at the beautiful blossoms several times each day, and they encourage me every time.

Besides encouragement this lovely gift gave me the opportunity to design a thank you card while playing with the new Combo Sentiments stamp set designed by Dina Kowal.  I paired it with the older poinsettia images from the CMS-10 Poinsettia set, and had some fun.

The technique I used, although technically it may be more of a recipe than a technique, is a longstanding favorite, I call "Spot of Color."

Here's how you do it:
With the exception of one thing, or "spot," keep the card's color scheme achromatic (black and white). That's it!  Looks great every time!

Additional Cardworks:
Versafine Black Onyx embossed with Transcendence powder.
Image colored with Prismacolor pencils.
Corner rounding punch used on upper corners only.
Basic layering.
Embellished with Blk/Wht Swiss dot ribbon.
Flower's center accented with yellow glitter glue.

Thanks For Asking

Poinsettia So many of you have asked about, prayed for, and wished my dad well, that I want to post an update on his condition.  I probably should have answered every e-mail individually as they have come in, but some of what I am dealing with is too painful to state over and over again, so I simply couldn't reply.

As you know, my dad went to see the cardiologist this past Thursday, just a week or so shy of three months after the heart attack.  Concerning his cardio, everything looks great, and after a soon to be administered stress test (just to be sure) is performed, a clean bill of health should be issued.

I wish I were jumping up and down with joy, and could tell you life has or shortly will revert to normalcy, but I'm not, and can't because from here on out, "normal" will never be the same...

Something about my dad's heart attack, triggered in him an acute case of dementia.  The man who, as of two days prior to his attack, was getting up three days a week and going to work in an office of the state's D.O.T, no longer exists.  In his place is someone who can't remember anything... even me (sometimes).

At first there was a possibility that once all the drugs and trauma cleared his system, the "forgetfulness" would pass.  Not so.  Recent testing has confirmed his condition to be permanent and progressive.  There are still a couple more tests left to go, so no one has come right out and used the "A" word (Alzheimer's) yet, but I am pretty sure all the signs are there.  It's very, very sad.  My dad is now physically healthy, but mentally unsound.

In case you've wondered, my brother never did come home in October.  He felt I was doing such a grand job of handling things, that I could continue to do so until he could afford to make a permanent move vs. a visit.  He assures me this will be by February 1.  Hmmm...

In the meantime, I continue to be errand girl, taxi cab driver, and secretary for my parents.  Dad will never drive again, and due to macular degeneration, neither will my mother.  Between the two of them, there are lots of appointments (I swear every time we leave a doctor's office, we cross one appointment off the calendar, and write in two more), and as in anyone's life, there are also lots of errands - groceries, pharmacy, bank, barber, dentist, etc.

I know I've told you before, but my parents live in rural Maine with access to nothing, and no neighbors or any other family members nearby.  For me, this means that every little thing needing to be done requires factoring in an hour of travel time.

Presently, I continue to face only one day at a time, setting priorities as to what the calendar has listed for that day... I remain unable to think too deeply about, or completely deal with the "big" picture...

Lest I make things sound too grim, however, I need add that God is always faithful.  He provides strength, courage, and wisdom as needed.  He has given me friends who uphold me in prayer, and those who let me know they sympathize with me, or are thinking about me.  He has supplied me with the greatest, most understanding husband I could ask for, and given me therapeutic work I LOVE... For all these things I am thankful and encouraged.  Yes, indeed, my journey is still very, very good, it's just not taking place on Easy Street...

Pear Tree Win

My dad's appointment is a bit later today than my mental calendar had noted, so instead of waiting for evening, I'm ending the suspense a few hours early...

Winner of the Pear Tree stamp set of rubber is Mary Dinucci of Florida!  Her rubber will be in the mail today!

Here's the stamping related item Mary would gift herself with this Christmas --

It's on my list... a Cuttlebug!  The embossed backgrounds are beautiful, and I could use it to cut shapes to use for my stamped cards.

Well, Mary, earlier this week, someone on the Gingerwood Bulletin board said Cuttlebugs are on sale at Creative Express... Hmmmm... Maybe you could don a Santa hat, and buy Mary her wish. ~wink, wink

To all you who participated, but didn't win, I enjoyed reading your comments.  Right now the "hot" wishes for the 2007 holiday season appear to be Nestabilities dies, the Circut cutter, and Copic markers.  My favorite comment, however, came from Renee K:

I would "buy" someone to help me get my craft room organized!

Wouldn't we all!  I chuckle every tiime I think of it.  So, Renee, for lightening my day, and putting a smile on my face, please e-mail me with your contact info. and address.  I'd like to send you "a little something" to add to all that disorganization. ~hee hee hee

Tea Party #4

Believe it or not, it's time to enjoy another spot of tea with some Cookies (the smART Cookies, that is).

This time the tea party hostess is Susan Liles.  Here is her invitation sketch:Sllayout_1

In case the text appears too small to distinguish, it says, "Wave."

At first I wasn't really sure the direction I wanted to take with this one... but having been in the process of designing holiday cards for a recent class, and already having my seasonal supplies/colors at hand, I decided to go with "Christmas."

I'm also not exactly sure how much "stampetic license" is acceptable within a sketch challenge, 'cause if you look closely, I believe I omitted an entire layer... Oops!  When discovered, I was in too deep to turn back, and couldn't afford the time to start over, so onward...

Scdt_tparty04 The image and saying, stamped in black and clear embossed, are from two different stamp sets -- ABC-Angel Hearts and CMS-20 In the Air.  A third set, Spotlight Solids, was used to ground the focal image, but after being stamped in soft grey, appeared a bit blah -- Easily fixed, I felt, with a slathering of diamond glitter glue.

Of course, then my base lacked pizazz.  Hmmmm....  I could distinctly hear my dear stamping buddy, Liz, saying, "You know you, Susan, you can fix anything with enough glitter..."  Yeah, that's the ticket!   More diamond glitter glue applied as an accent to the print paper.  Perfect!

The little girl image, by the way, actually started out as a folk angel, but I de-winged her (I can assure you, she barely winced).  Her cut-out was then mounted over the glittered spotlight via foam tape.

Portions of the image were colored with markers, but the dress and hair bows were pieced from the decorative print.

The sketch's "wave" was made by freehand cutting along cardstock.  Then edged with rickrack.

Punched snowflakes were added as sort of an afterthought... They seemed to tie in nicely with both the print paper and the saying, and also provided an opportunity for adding a little more bling (rhinestone centers).  I think they make take the piece from "folksy" to "folksy-festive."

If you're curious to see what all the other Cookies did at the party, you can check out their creations here:  Susiestampalot, Tah Dah!, Dee's Studio, Sweet Somethings, and Mama Dini's Stamperia.

You could even throw your stamps into the pot, and give this sketch your personal "pour."  If you do, post a link, and let me see.

P.S.  Remember, tomorrow morning around 7:40 a.m. Mr. Eli will be drawing the winning name for the Pear Tree contest.  Means you still have plenty of time to enter.  Find out how in Monday's Pear Tree Challenge and Contest entry.

Pear Tree Challenge and Contest

Posting the projects from the smART Cookie Challenge #2 to the smART website, was also one of those EOTM things for which I recently had to invest some time...

Cms09_peartree For this round of the challenge, the Cookies (Dina, Donna, Trish, Heidi, and Susan L.) had each been sent this set, and asked to create "something."

When all the finished results came back, I couldn't help but note how almost all the cards had similar layouts, but that each Cookie had employed entirely different techniques -- guilding, embossed vellum, gel pens, heat embossing, stitching, blended pencils, etc.  Hmmmmmm... it got me wondering, "Had I participated, what would I have done???"

Now, as with the last Cookie Challenge, I'm going to launch a contest, and give away one free set of "Pear Tree" rubber.  It's not only a fun thing to do, but it also allows one of you to contemplate the same question, "What would I have done?" And act upon it.

"Pear Tree" Contest Rules:
To participate, answer the following question by way of a comment, then Thursday morning (Dec. 6), before he leaves for school (7:40 a.m.), my eleven year old, Mr. Eli, will randomly draw one comment out of the proverbial hat.  The owner of the comment, wins the rubber.

The winning name will be announced right here sometime on Thursday (but since I also have to take my dad to the cardiologist that day, the post probably won't be made until evening.)

Here is the question:
Not that any of you actually do this, ~wink, wink, but supposing you did... What one stamping related Christmas present would you buy for yourself this year, and why?  Yes, you must narrow it down to just one, so think hard, wish big, and have fun.

Lots... and Lots...

and lots has been going on in my life... The end of the month craziness, my parent's continual need for assistance, the resumption of teaching classes, and thoughts of the holidays.  I guess you could say, my buzz word is "B-U-S-Y!"  No complaints, however, because I know I'm not alone... God is always at my side, and in one way or another, everyone I meet or talk to appears to be in the same boat... just navigating along a different stream...

At first I thought I could make one post and update everything, but that's pretty unrealistic -- I don't have a single block of time to do it, and you probably don't want to use a big chunk of your time reading it....Soooooooo, over the next few days, I will tackle each item on the "busy list," and catch us up that way.

Today let's focus on the E.O.T.M. (end of the month) --
The smART website has been updated with lots of good stuff:  New specials, a Dina Kowal background tutorial, the addition of some great punches, the results of the smART Cookie Challenge #2 (~sniff, sniff, I think I smell a contest in the wind), and this card project:

Dec_webfeature In real life, I prefer to focus on Jesus being the "reason for the season," but let's face it, when anyone dons a Santa hat, something a little magical takes place...

Stamps: Message Mouse and Mini Messages #3  (specially priced)
Ink:  Black and clear embossed with Transcendence powder
Embellished With:  Dimensional glaze and Dazzle Dust

The other specials this month:
Buy 3, Then Choose One For Free
For every 3 stamps/sets you purchase this month, choose a fourth for free - Price of the free set may not exceed that of your least expensive purchased item.

Holiday Gift Certificate Special
Purchase a smART gift certificate for $25.00 or more by the 15th of the month, and I will personally "wrap" it in a handmade holiday card, include any message you wish, and mail it to the recipient of your choice -- no additional cost to you.

There!  Next time we'll take a look at the smART Cookie Challenge #2 results, and introduce that little contest...
